Learning to write numbers

Children learn to write numbers best after they can count, so the number already means something:

Where each number starts

Every number on the sheet has a green dot where the pencil goes down first, and every one of them starts at or near the top line. Following the dot builds the habit of starting in the same place every time, which is what makes handwriting automatic later.

Number words

Choose Number and word to trace “3 three” on each row. Spelling the words becomes useful in kindergarten and first grade, when children start reading word problems.

More practice

The same lines and letters are used for the letter tracing worksheets and for name tracing, so a child moving between them sees the same thing every time.

Questions people ask

Can I print just one number?

Yes. Set both Numbers boxes to the same number, for example 7 to 7, and you get a full page of that number.

What age are number tracing worksheets for?

Most children are ready to trace numbers between 3 and 5, around the time they can count objects. Start with 1 to 5 in extra large size, then move on to 1 to 10 and 1 to 20.

Why does my child write numbers backwards?

Reversals of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9 are very common up to about age 7 and usually fade on their own. The green start dot shows where each number begins, which helps more than correcting the finished number.

Can I add the number words?

Yes. Choose Number and word under Show, and each row reads like “3 three”, which works well in kindergarten and first grade.

Are these free for classroom use?

Yes. Print as many as you need for home or classroom use.
