Moving on to the last name

Once a child writes their first name without help, the last name is the natural next step. It usually brings new letters, and it teaches something new too: leaving a space between words.

Long names

The worksheet fits the full name on every row, so long names get slightly smaller letters. If they get too small to trace comfortably, practice each name on its own sheet first with the kindergarten name tracing settings.

Questions people ask

When do children learn to write their last name?

Usually in kindergarten, once the first name is written with confidence. Many kindergarten report cards ask for first and last name by the end of the year.

What if the full name is too long for one line?

The letters shrink automatically so the whole name fits on each row. For a very long name, choose Medium or Small letter size, or practice the first and last name on separate sheets.

Can I include a middle name?

Yes. Type the name exactly as it should be written, with spaces between the names.

Can I make full-name sheets for a whole class?

Yes. Use the class list option and put each child's first and last name on its own line.
